Introduction to Choosing a Venue for Amateur Drama
Most amateur theatre groups do not have the luxury of a dedicated performance and rehearsal space. Many operate out of local school and
parish halls and have to accept less than ideal conditions. For those groups that do have a choice it is well worth putting time and effort into making the right decision.
Directors and designers will be very interested in the size and shape of the venue but there are other factors to consider. For example, seating capacity will have a big influence on the ability to generate revenue, something which should be close to the top of any group’s priority list.
When considering various locations the person or group responsible for the selection should be also clear as to whether or not the space will be used for rehearsals as well as the actual performances. It is not essential that the same building is used but it could inflence the desision.
Other factors to consider include.
1. Storage Space
Most groups rely on the goodwill of members when it comes to storage arrangements but as productions become larger more formal arrangements may need to be put in place. For more details on selecting a storage space > Click Here
2. Rehearsal Space
An accessible rehearsal space is essential if a production is to be a success.
3. Hire / Buy a Space
