EYE SHADOW FOR BURLESQUE PERFORMANCES

It is amazing just how much attention a well “made up” pair of eyes wll attract. Framing your eyes in a fun and exaggerated manner will transform a standard burlesque costume into a work of art. What you need is imagination and a little bit of work.

Starting with the basics you should consider nothing less than cream eye shadow with cosmetic glitter patted on top. This can then be augmented with liquid eyeliner, eyebrow pencils, false eyelashes etc. Your look can vary greatly depending on what you do with your eyebrows.

Everyone is different and some burlesque performers have gone as far as to shave off their eyebrows just so they can develop the right look. This may not be something you are too keen on if you are just attending a fancy dress party, so there are other options. Cake foundation and powder do a great job concealing eyebrows.

No moulin rouge fancy dress costume would be complete without some big false eyelashes. These days there is a huge selection online and all are relatively easy to apply. If the eyelashes you purchase are not supplied with adhesive then be careful when purchasing it. Make sure the description of the adhesive you buy matches the type of lashes.

You should finish  your eye shadow and eyeliner before applying lashes. Put a spot of glue on a clean surface and run the  strip through it. then use a blunt make up tool to to tap a few spots on your lids close to your eyelashes. Then just set the false lashes on the dots of glue, wait to dry and hey presto a moulin rouge beauty is born !! Be patient it may take a few attempts.

For those hosting a moulin rouge party make sure you put effort into the make up. As host you are setting the tone and there is no better way to let your guests know they are at a great party than by appearing in a fabulous costume.

GLITTER LIPS FOR BURLESQUE

Burlesque performances are about challenging the conventional, so if you are hosting or performing in a moulin rouge
or burlesque party / show pay attention to the finer points of make up and it will enhance the overall look of your costume.

For example when it comes to lipstick why not use glitter. Simply apply some matt or cream lipstick and pat cosmetic glitter  on top of it. There is no end to the number of colour combinations you can use. Experiment with different colours of glitter over different colours of lipstick.. Eyelash glue can be used to help hold the glitter in place.

In general when preparing for a moulin rouge fancy dress party make sure you pay attention to costuming above the neck. For best  effect don’t just grab a costume and leave it at that. If your costume is fabulous but your face and hair are drab then the fabulous costume can lose it’s affect. For fancy dress parties, attention to detail makes all the difference.

BURLESQUE – MAKE UP AND HAIR

For amateur theatre companies that want to introduce burlesque style costumes and  routines into their prroductions there is plenty to consider. It is not just a matter of grabbing a fancy dress costume and heading on stage.

Burlesque is about exaggeration, fun and humour. If you want the wow factor then your hair, jewelry and make up have to be top notch.

First off there is make-up. You do not have to be an expert make up artist to get results but when it comes to burlesque, there are a few points to keep in mind, the main one being, you are not trying to conform to accepted daily norms but looking for fabulous glamour in a playful sometimes surrealistic theatre.

Make the most of foundations. Here you can experiment a bit. Complexion problems are no obstacle to creating a truely stunning burlesque look. Use the foundation to accentuate and exaggerate your feminine traits.

No burlesque make up would be complete without plenty of blush, it is essential for animating your face. Which colour of blush looks best on a burlesque stage will depend on your skin colour.

The points above are a very quick run through the basics of make up for burlesque routines but we  will be continuing with the theme over the next couple of posts.
