Ancient Greek Toga Party

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

This party is full of activity and is based on an ancient Greek theme complete with Olympics. Here is some help
in getting things organised

Enjoy the long Summer evenings by hosting a toga fancy dress party

Toga Fancy Dress Party

1. Party Invitations
Go with something a little different. To make sure the guests know exactly what type of fancy dress party they are attending use  wording similar to

                ENJOY AN ANCIENT PARTY
Zeus and Athena (Ronan and Alison)
In the Courtyard of their Villa (22 Stepaside)
At the next Full Moon (2nd August)
                7.30 (PM)
                Dress Code : Best Toga

Food and Fun will be supplied

2. Greeting the Guests
As the guests arrive get them into the party mood by having a little fun. For example take their photo against the backdrop   of an “ancient” scene. This does not have to be complicated, just a plain background with a few plant pots and hanging “greenery” These photos can then be posted on Facebook etc

If your party is a more formal and affair why not hire a musician such as a harpist and ask them to come dressed in themed clothing, ie fancy dress

3. Decorations
Attention to detail when it comes to decorating a party venue makes such a difference. Ideally an “ancient” party is best held outside  during the Summer. Use plenty of candles and torches to illuminate your patio or garden, hanging baskets of flowers and greenery, especially ferns are ideal.  If you have a pond or fountain place floating candles in it.

Creating a classical Greek look will also require plenty of terra cotta urns and if you can get your hands on them some statue busts.

The dominant colours should be white and gold so make sure anything that stays still for longer than 2 minutes is sprayed in an appropriate colour. Don’t forget  Christmas garlands. People normally have them stored in an attic. It may seem a little strange taking them out during the Summer not they are perfect for an  “ancient Greek” party.

Table decorations do not have to be complicated or expensive. For example if you decide to use disposable cutlery simply tieing a set of white knive, fork and spoon  with gold ribbon looks great.

As you can see there is plenty you can do to set the scene for an ancient Greek fancy dress party. In the next post I will continue with more ideas and an outline of some of the games and activities you can try.

Summer Parties – Picnics

SUMMER PICNICS

With the sun shinning and the forecast set to be good for the next week or so it is a perfect opportunity to organise a picnic. If you are lucky enough to live close to a park or wooded area then  it should not be too difficult.

Perhaps you have already planned a Holy Communion Party, or an end of school celebration and it is just a case of swtiching venue. Whatever the situation a picnic is well wort considering.

Here are some suggestions for organising a picnic

1. Try and cut down on the preparation of meals in the park. If possible assemble prepackaged meals. They can contain good wholsome food, just do as much of the preparation at home as possible.

2. In each preprepared meal include small bags for disposing of the left overs. This saves on the  tidy up

3. Make sure you have games organised. In a park or wooded area a treasure hunt is one game that seems obvious.

4. Another game that is very popular is throwing small balls or bags of sand into a bucket. Both adults and children can have hours of fun.

5. If you are having games then you will need prizes. Some parents like to ensure everyone gets something to take home, something like a party bag, but in my opinion there is no harm in giving the winners prizes.

6. Plenty of sun tan lotion. Don’t forget it.

7. A small First Aid kit. it can be as simple as a few bandages and anti septic but another item that can come in handy is a bottle of Piriton, just in case anyone has a reaction to a bee sting or bite.

If you are changing the venue to a park make sure all the guests know. They will want to come prepared or at least send  their child in suitable clothing.

Here at moulin rouge fancy dress we are specialist costume suppliers but even if it does not relate directly to fancy dress we like to post useful articles on our blog. Please feel free to let us know if there are  any topics you would like covered.
